The airwaves over the past few weeks have been filled with one thing only- the war in Ukraine. But something very significant is happening on American soil, the possibility of the first black woman as a judge on the Supreme Court. Justice Jackson has been and is currently facing confirmation hearings for her appointment as a Supreme Court Justice. Over the past few days, politicians have also used her position as the nominee of a democratic president to throw some gasoline onto the fire that is partisan infighting.
It should be noted that Justice Jackson mentioned that she is a staunch supporter of impartiality when it comes to the role of judge. She realizes that it is her job to see both points of view when cases are brought up to the Supreme Court with the question of constitutionality. She vows to put aside her own beliefs and adjudicate fairly. Throughout the hearings Republicans have thrown snide remarks towards Justice Jackson in an attempt to annoy the Democrats. One such remark came when Republican senator Lindsey Graham asked Justice Jackson about her faith and how it informs her role as a judge. She was reluctant to speak about her faith and instead chose the more neutral path. She stated that she separates her faith from her rulings and only looks to the question of constitutionality when it comes to adjudicating. Senator Graham asked this question in order to call the Democrats out on their hypocrisy when they questioned Justice Barrett regarding her faith. She will now await the decision of the senate after the hearing is done, and will likely become the first black Supreme Court Justice in history.
