It was 6:30 on a winter's morning. Still in bed, I looked out my window, which was blurry from condensation. With a sudden burst of energy, I sprung out of bed and placed my hand on the damp window. I estimated that it was around 40 degrees (F), perfect weather for sweatpants. After putting on my favorite pair, I continued with my morning routine.

Just as I was about to leave for school, I heard a voice call out from the hall, giving me the news that would ruin my whole day. “You can't wear that,” said the voice. I turned to see my mom standing in the doorway, who began reciting an email she had received from my school the day prior. This email informed parents and students that while it may be cold outside, students are still not permitted to wear sweatpants to school. My heart sank as I reluctantly walked to my closet to swap my sweatpants for jeans. Not only are jeans less comfortable than sweatpants, but they are also less warm. This fact made me dread leaving my properly heated house, now that I was less protected against the wrath of mother nature. As I opened the door, the cold air immediately consumed me. Freezing, I quickly stumbled to my car, slammed the door shut, and drove off.

On my way to school, I couldn't help but question the reasoning behind this attack on sweatpants. I was familiar with the idea of sweatpants being “sloppy”, but I still couldn't understand why my school showed a complete disregard for the comfort of their students. I spent that whole day freezing and miserable, all because of a stupid stigma. I guess this just goes to show that beauty truly is pain. Thanks a lot society!

What do you think? Should we fight against this wrongful stigma and break the shackles of the school dress code?

  1. Yes! I love sweatpants and the fact that we are not allowed to wear them to school is absurd! This stigma around sweatpants that the school has created is terrible. Not only does it bar us from being comfortable at school, but it also makes wanting to go to school less probable because we can't go in comfortable attire.

  2. I'm not a huge fan of sweatpants or pants in general because I hate wearing them and they make me itchy. However, I don't have anything against other people wearing them if they are considered comfortable.

  3. While I do think that sweatpants may be considered informal, it is absolutely necessary in some circumstances such as the one you described. I think that it is more important for the school to value the comfort of their students, which in turn improves student performance, rather than the formal appearance of the school.
