                                                            Hobbies and Freetime

For nearly all of my life, I have had two huge hobbies: sports and video games. When I first started growing up, I was into soccer and Minecraft. I would join local YMCA soccer recreational leagues, and after playing some games, I would come back home to some cartoons or some Minecraft with online friends. In the past couple of years, I have transitioned from playing soccer to playing basketball. Now that I have the art of basketball with me, I can play my hobby by myself. Therefore, basketball is always there for me, and I am always there for basketball. It's a way of relieving the stress that school, friends, family, my mind, and the ideas of the future bring me. Basketball brings out my competitive and hardworking nature; it's also an incredibly fun game. Just like basketball, video games serve the same purpose for me: a stress reliever and an overall way of expressing myself through creativity and fun experiences. However, video games are not always there for me, and that's because playing them is not as convenient as playing sports.

You can work out/exercise and play your sport all at once; it's killing two birds with one stone. But video games, they're just a fun form of entertainment. You need lots of free time in order to get the full experience that video games have to offer. High school and free time (at least for me) don't really mix well. I will have some lucky weeks where I have only one test or project and not too much studying or homework to do. But usually, this isn't the case. I usually have three tests/projects/essays per week this semester, and it takes out a lot of energy from me. Weirdly enough though, exerting more energy from my mind and body into my hobbies gives me more energy. Anyways, this week I have only half of a school week, and that means I have more free time. During this free time, I have already been playing more basketball and video games with friends. I recently got back into playing the popular battle royale game "Apex Legends", and oh boy do I miss that game. It's easily one of my favorites, and I'm quite good at it. I forgot the amazing experience video games with friends gave me, and I'll never let go of the memories video games have brought to my consciousness. Both basketball and video games have defined my personality, they have shaped who I am, and they have kept me sane.

What hobbies do you have that manage your stress, and how important
are they to you? What's your best memory of doing something with your hobby?

  1. My favorite hobby to manage stress is riding my bike. I also love to draw and paint. These two hobbies are very important to my life because they are things that I have been doing for so long, and I have many memories of doing them. I remember all the times riding my bike for hours with my friends around town. I also remember all the meaningful drawings I have made in the past.
