                                                                    Will Smith and Chris Rock

On Sunday, March 27, the Oscars went live on television. During the Oscar, famous comedian and actor Chris Rock gave a speech before the winners were announced. His speech included many jokes, some of which, seemed moderately offensive. But hey, what do you expect from a famous comedian, right? Well, Chris Rock made fun of Will Smith's wife, and it was about her shaved bald head. Will Smith began laughing at first, but after seeing his own wife frustrated and uncomfortable due to the joke, he took heer matters into his hands, literally.

Will Smith got on stage and smacked Chris Rock right in the face. As Chris Rock stood in shock, Will Smith sat back down, yelled, and swore directly at Chris Rock. This incident has been on my mind since I've seen it. It's so bizarre to see such a thing happen live at such a professional event. Of course, the internet has dealt with the situation in two different ways: maturely, and immaturely. The immature side of the internet has made many memes about the incident, many of which, are on TikTok. They are hilarious, and I love them. The mature side of the internet has created a discussion about the scene, debating who was in the right and who was in the wrong. It is clear (through visual evidence) that Will Smith began laughing at first, indicating that he thought the joke was funny and not overly offensive. But as soon as he looked at his wife and realized she didn't like the joke so much, he decided to do something. In my opinion, Will Smith went way too far. I don't think he should have even got onto the stage, let alone assault the man. I bet if it were a different Rock, Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson, Will Smith would have kept laughing. I think Will Smith took advantage of the fact that Chris Rock is overly nice, the exact opposite of a fighter, and way smaller than him, and that's not okay. There have to be consequences made, there must be justice served. Chris Rock is a comedian, it is his literal job to make jokes, many of which, are meant to poke harmless fun at people. No joke is meant to hurt anyone, and if they do, the answer is not violence. Violence doesn't beat violence, fire doesn't beat fire. Then again, it is also possible that this entire thing was planned out for views and attention. Who knows? They do.

What do you think? Who is in the right and who is in the wrong? Why? Is it possible that this entire incident was faked in order to accumulate more of an audience for the entirety of the Oscars?

  1. I truly think that Chris Rock is in the right here. I don't think that the joke was that big of a deal. It is a comedian's job to make the audience laugh, and sometimes the jokes cross the line, which to me, is okay. However, I feel like this very well could have been fake, as nobody really talks about the Oscars anymore, so it would make sense for them to fake it.
