Noah Bard - Week 7: Another School Shooting

Six teenagers have all been charges as adults for first-degree murder and two charges of attempted murder after a deadly shooting took place in East High School, Iowa.
These teenagers are 17-year-old Octavio Lopez, 14-year-old Nyang Chamdual, 16-year-old Manuel Buezo, 16-year-old Romero Perdomo, 15-year-old Alex Perdomo, and 17-year-old Henry Valladares-Amaya, all of whom are Des Moines residents.
The victim? 15-year-old Jose David Lopez, also a Des Moines resident. Lopez had been walking near the high school when, all of a sudden, he was shot at from multiple vehicles. Lopez had been with two females, as well, however, he was the target of the shooting. However, the two females were also injured.
At around 2:48 pm, multiple 911 calls were made by civilians reporting that they heard gun shots, and saying that multiple people got injured. When police arrived at the scene, they found the teenagers, who were all badly hurt. Lopez died from his injuries, and the 16-year-old female is also in critical condition. However, the 18-year-old female that was with them is recovering well.
Six firearms were recovered from the scene that day, and according to police, the shots were fired by multiple different people in different vehicles. Shell casings were also recovered by investigators. Police say that some gang members were involved in this shooting, and that all of the suspects were taken into custody within an hour of the shooting.
This story is still developing, and Iowa State Patrol, Polk County Sheriff’s Office, ATF, FBI, and the Des Moines Public Schools Department of Public Safety are all helping with the investigation.

What do you think about this story? What can we do to prevent tragedies like this from happening again in the future?

Comments

  1. I think it's horrible that drive-by and school shootings are still occurring. The world keeps disappointing me as I get older, but I try to find hopeful and happy things whenever I can.

  2. I think this story is terrifying and horrific and it's so disappointing when I hear stories like this. To be completely honest, there are so many things out of our control, and I feel as if this is one of those scenarios. Therefore, I am not sure what we can do to prevent tragedies like this from happening again in the future but, certainly hope that an efficient solution arises quickly.
