Michael Hakim Week 9 - Yet Another Deadly Car Crash

Tuesday, March 22 2022, in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, six high school students were killed in a car accident. The six students, all girls, were driving to lunch off-campus during their reak when they collided with a semi-truck.

The girls, who were riding in a small passenger vehicle, all died after the collision took place at 12:30 pm (local time).

Bobby Waitman, the Superintendent of Tishomingo Public Schools, gave a brief speech on the incident, speaking on how the girls all attended the high school, and how their losses were “devastating” to the community, one in which the staff at the school knows each of the students there. Waitman spoke on how the school “love[s] all of [their] students” and how they are “experiencing this loss with them.” Waitman also said that the school is offering counselors to speak with the students.

Tishomingo only contains around 3,000 people and is located around 120 miles north of Dallas. This small city is not often the subject of national media attention, and this definitely isn’t the positive story that the residents of the town were hoping for.

No other information has been released on the students or the driver of the truck. However, this story is still developing, and there will be more updates.

This tragedy is sadly yet another reminder of the importance of being careful on the road. The United States has always had an issue with car crashes but recently, it seems that too many lives are being lost from these crashes.

What do you think we, as a country, should do to prevent these car crashes?

  1. That is such a sad story. I feel bad for those girls and anyone who knew them. I believe that everyone should be more aware while they drive. It is dangerous on the road and it is worse when people ignore the speed limit, go on their phones while driving, or are just simply distracted.

  2. I feel terrible for everyone involved in the accident. I do not know if there is anything we can do as a country in terms of laws to stop crashes, but I do think that parents and trustworthy figures should emphasize street safety and guidelines to hopefully stop as many accidents as possible.

  3. I always find it so saddening when there is a car crash. As a student driver myself, it is always important that I and others are aware of our surroundings since we are technically new drivers. It is typically hard to prevent car crashes other than tell people to pay attention while driving. I think it mostly comes from how people are taught to drive. It is crazy to me how in Florida, the test is sooooo easy. It takes 5 minutes and you barely go over the speed of 10. Maybe that's why there are so many car crashes?
