Maya Garaway Week 21: Change Over Time

All of us are different than who we were 10 years ago, 5 years ago, and even a year ago. The change can be in appearances, thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, morals, and more. All of these changes are caused by each one of our experiences. This is a topic that I am currently learning in my AP Psychology class and have been reflecting on it a lot recently.

For me, there are two notable aspects of this that stand out to me and they only change based on the mindset that you have. The first is that our “unique” experiences shape who we are. Yes, these experiences shape who we are and are important to us, but are they really unique? No matter what you go through, someone else has most likely experienced it. This mindset of experiences being unique or not can either isolate or almost comfort you during difficult times. This leads me to my second reflection point which is, if these experiences are similar, how do people end up with such different personalities? The truth to me is that we may be similar in some ways and different in another. We all handle our problems, goals, and just life in different and similar ways.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately and there is no solid answer. We all handle life differently. If I compare myself from freshman year to now, I can barely recognize my old self. I used to be able to stress about small homework assignments, others' opinions of me, and other small details in my life and I no longer can. Honestly, I miss that in some weird twisted way. Anyway, that is my psychological reflection of the week!

What changes have you noticed in yourself over time? Are there any specific experiences that have shaped you? Do you miss anything from the past?

Comments

  1. I have noticed a lot of change in myself. I feel like the more life you experience the more you change. I have changed so much since I moved to Florida. That is definitely something that changed me a lot that happened in my life. Something that I miss a lot from my past is my old school. The switch from private school to public school made a huge impact in my life and that switch back to private school made me notice how much I have changed since eighth grade.
