Maya Garaway Week 20: Disney's Walkout

Recently, there have been many opposing beliefs to the new “don't say gay” bill. Many people have been speaking out, including companies. Today, there was a Disney walkout that occurred to the increase of companies, like Mariott and American Airlines,  taking a stand against the bill. At first, the company was advised by its chief executives to remain quiet and work behind the scenes in response to the bill, but that did not remain. Many workers encouraged their employers to speak out. This caused the chief executive to publicly disavow the bill on March 9th. The workers were still unsatisfied with the results and soon the protests were organized. On Tuesday, about sixty to seventy workers walked out and walked around the park, protesting the bill. Disney then released a statement in support saying “we respect our colleagues’ right to express their views, and we pledge our ongoing support of the L.G.B.T.Q.+ community in the fight for equal rights.”

Disney has recently been taking more action. Recently, there was a meeting discussing LGBTQ+ issues. The meeting covered topics that included, the effect of the bill, course of action, and ways to be more supportive of the community. The workers were also capable of restoring a scene in an upcoming movie, “Lightyear,” which features a same-sex kiss.

To me, it is still surprising that a bill like this has the ability to be passed. I am glad to see the action against it though. Do you think Disney should have done more or less? Why?

  1. I think Disney did do a lot by their protest because Disney is a global company and for the company to make a protest like that is huge.

  2. I think that Disney did everything they could and what they could do. They have the right to do that and it is great that they speak out and make it publicly known that they respect the views of their colleagues.

  3. I think that Disney's decision to respect what their employees wanted and support it is a good reflection on Disney. Disney is a huge and very influential company, so conducting a protest like this impacts many people. This helps Disney because people like Disney more knowing that no matter who they are, they are accepted by the company.

  4. I do think that Disney should have been more active talking about the don't say gay bill, but I think the action against it that they are doing now is really good.
