Maya Garaway Week 18: North Korea Testing More Missiles
To add on to the chaotic events of the world, we have missile testing. On March 5, North Korea fired a ballistic missile. This made the missile the ninth test of the year from North Korea. This missile was reported by South Korea. It is said that the missile was fired from North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang, and was aimed towards eastern waters, but the missile's distance was unknown. Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi was able to make an assumption. He estimates that the missile landed outside of the country’s exclusive economic zone because there were no reports of damage. After more research, it is assumed that “the missile flew about 180 miles eastward at a maximum altitude of 340 miles before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.” North Korea says that the purpose of these launches is to test camera systems for satellites which is still a work in progress.
This launch was seen as concerning due to the timing of this launch. The launch occurred at the time of two significant events. One is the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Some countries are concerned that this was purposeful. That caused little attention to be given to the missile launch from North Korea because the countries are preoccupied with Russia. The missile was also launched while people in South Korea were voting. The new leader will have to consider how they deal with the threat of nuclear weapons from North Korea.
As time goes on, more information will be known and countries may have to make a decision in how to proceed.
What are your thoughts on this? What do you think of the timing?
This is really scary. I hope that this doesn't mean anything bad, and that the timing was just a coincidence. Personally, I couldn't tell you, as nobody really knows what is going on in North Korea.
ReplyDeleteHaving a such a horrible power such as North Korea in the world is tough enough already, but now they are testing out more and more nuclear weapons. Who knows what will happen one day with North Korea and their nuclear capabilities? Hopefully, they will be somewhat more controlled soon enough.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea this happened, but this is very scary. There is already so much going on in the world, so the timing is not the best.
