Noah Bard - Week 8: March Madness is Here!

Every year at this time, the March Madness craziness begins. For anyone that doesn’t know what March Madness is, it’s the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament. March Madness is easily one of the most popular sporting events in the Country. Not only does March Madness provide supreme entertainment for its fans, but it also provides a unique opportunity for its participants.

The way the competing teams in March Madness are chosen is simple. In the NCAA there are 32 conferences, each with its own unique winner. Each conference champion earns an automatic bid to the tournament. The other 36 slots are chosen by the Selection Committee on Selection Sunday. This special committee looks at a number of things including record, and the competition played throughout the regular season. Once all 68 teams are chosen, they are placed into a bracket in the order of seeding. And this is where the fun begins.

You might be familiar with the NBA, and how their playoffs work but March Madness is very different. Each game in the bracket is its own “final”, meaning if you lose you are out. This provides an intense feeling to each game as the top seeds play the bottom seeds, and the chance for an upset arises. A popular activity related to March Madness is filling out your own bracket. FYI the odds of filling out a perfect bracket are 1 in 9.2 quintillion. Although the chances for unknown players to make a name for themselves are much higher.

The possibility of upsets and the advancements of lower seed teams to make it far in the tournament are quite common. And with this opportunity available, it’s almost certain that one player from an underdog team will be the star. It’s a unique opportunity to gain popularity and rise your NBA Draft stock.

March Madness is in my opinion the best sports event in the country. Every game, even if you don’t know a single player, is intense because everyone watching knows the consequences of losing. March Madness can’t come sooner, and America is waiting.

Are you familiar with March Madness? Are you going to try your luck with a March Madness bracket?

  1. If anyone knows me, they know I am super competitive. While I do not watch all the different sports, I love March Madness because I like to get the best bracket. I have made tons of brackets and have entered into tons of contests to hopefully win!
