Lindsey Maschler Week 20: Disney World regrets Texas drill team's performance

Disney World recently had a high school drill team in one of their parades that had a performance that included Native American stereotypes, which offended a lot of people. Disney world said they regret allowing the performance in their Florida theme park by the Texas high school drill team. The NBC affiliate KPRC of Houston reported that the performance last week by the Indianettes drill team of Port Neches-Grove High School included chants of "scalp them" and gestures disrespectful to Native Americans.

"The live performance in our park did not reflect our core values, and we regret it took place," Disney World spokesperson Jacquee Wahler said in a statement. The park did not say the high school was disinvited in the future, however, they did say performances similar to this would not happen again. "It was not consistent with the audition tape the school provided, and we have immediately put measures in place so this is not repeated," Wahler said.

Cherokee Nation Principal, Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr., said in a statement that the tribe has asked the district in the past couple of years to not do the performance again, which he said features offensive imagery, chanting, and other offensive symbolism and gestures. "School leaders need educating on cultural appropriateness, should apologize for continuing to ignore our requests to stop, and need to make swift changes to correct these offensive displays across their school district," he said. What do you think of this? Should the team be punished for the inappropriate performance?

  1. I think that making fun of others in such a public sending is really awful and the school who set up this dance and refuses to see anything wrong with it should be reprimanded in some way.

  2. This is inappropriate and not cool. The school who allowed this performance should be called out and shouldn't let this happen again.
