Liam Meldung - Week 18, Amazon Moving Towards a "Tipping Point"

I feel like this week the big topic is going to be about Russia and the war with Ukraine. Even though that is such a big part of our present lives, I felt like we needed a breather from that topic and to see what else was going on in our world. The more environmental and scientific part of our world.

The Amazon is a necessary part of human survival. Its dense forests are a big part of how the whole world gets back clean air that we can breathe. It also holds a vast amount of exotic wildlife and endangered wildlife as well. This process traps carbon dioxide and makes oxygen which helps keep global warming to move at a slower pace. Without the Amazon global warming could get even worse and very fast. Now that many countries have been taking part in deforestation in the Amazon there are less and less trees there. Also this causes the remaining trees to have to take on more than they can handle.

The Amazon is on its way to its “tipping point”. Dr. Chris Boulton from the University of Exeter explains that the trees are becoming sicker. He explains that we have data supporting this, that the trees are taking longer to recover from droughts which are caused by climate change, by deforestation, and fires. This issue is happening with about 75% of the forest in the Amazon.

If this point is reached it could have drastic consequences on our planet Earth. Global warming can become an even greater issue because the Amazon holds a lot of carbon dioxide. This issue is happening because of the two pressures. Global warming and human interference. If this continues, the world is going to be very different within the next few decades. Slowly this will happen if nothing is done to stop the deforestation processes set in place by many countries around the world.

What do you think about this? Does it scare you a little?

Comments

  1. It is important for us to prevent this happening. We can organize cleanups at various places to limit the pollution and offer less plastic and styrofoam that are harmful to the environment. It is important to help the environment to keep the amazon from entering its "tipping point".

  2. It definitely does scare me a little, but we cant do anything but help spread the word and do things to keep it from fully tipping, as you said, and we need to start being more serious about keeping our environment clean.
