Leah Nagle Week 7 - NATO’s Rejection of Ukraine’s No-Fly Zone Request
Ukraine asked NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the alliance between Western European countries and the United States that promises to defend other NATO countries in war) to declare it a “no-fly zone,” meaning that Ukrainian grounds are off limits to Russian warplanes and aircraft, in order to protect civilians and military targets. Despite Ukraine’s desperate request, NATO has refused to enforce this.
NATO’s reasoning as to why they won’t declare Ukraine a no-fly zone is because it would only create serious, direct conflict between the NATO countries and Russia. Since Ukraine is not a member of NATO, the NATO countries are attempting to avoid war and staying away from Russia, doing everything they can to assist Ukraine behind the scenes. If the NATO countries granted Ukraine’s request to make it a no-fly zone, they would be responsible for patrolling the air with their own aircraft and be ready to battle Russia in the air. This is in order to ensure that no one on Ukrainian ground is attacked from the air.
I think that it’s truly heartbreaking to hear about and see all the Ukrainian men, women, and children whose lives have been completely destroyed by Russia’s attacks, however, I understand why NATO is doing everything they can to avoid joining the war. Of course many Ukrainian casualties, deaths, refugees, and people being forced to fight as soldiers is an awful situation, but if NATO joins this war as Ukraine’s ally, does that mean the start of a potential World War III? It’s a scary thought, one that’s actually been haunting me recently. We’ve just almost overcome a pandemic, we certainly don’t need a major war as well. When I sit in my classes in school and look around the room, many of my fellow classmates, our young American boys, would be drafted for war. Like I said, that is certainly something we don’t need. Hopefully Russian President Vladimir Putin will stop all this conflict soon so this war will end once and for all.
What do you think about the Russian and Ukrainian conflict?

The entire conflict is so devastating. It is a crisis that could have been avoided all together if Putin didn't feel the need to invade Ukraine. Unfortunately, Ukraine is not part of NATO, so the whole situation is complicated since NATO is attempting to not get seriously involved and start basically World War III. I hope the situation gets solved soon, but I do not think a solution is in the near future.
