Hannah Shinder: Week 9- Doctors Helping Ukrainians

Not only is there a major crisis currently with the Ukrainians due to the Russians,  but many have more issues as well. Like every other human, many have health conditions that they cannot forget about while also trying to leave their “war-torn country”. Many Ukrainians have successfully left and made it to Poland where they are being treated by health officials from Warsaw and other places as well.

The head of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at the Medical University in Rzeszow, which is about an hour from the Ukrainian border, says they are dealing with a lot of Ukrainian patients that have been diagnosed with cancer and hematological diseases. Even though these people are going through one of their hardest times seeing their homes become a war zone is traumatic, but their health is also an important factor. This is why many doctors outside of Ukraine are taking initiative and helping those since it is hard to do close to home. For instance, The U.S.-based St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital partnered with hospitals and doctors all over Europe.

Yarsalava, who has acute leukemia, was being transported from Ukraine to Ireland, Or her transportation process, she developed an infection. Yarsalava’s mother said that since arriving in Poland, she has been treated and getting all the support that she has needed. It is heartwarming to see that “28 countries and more than 201 clinics across the world are offering support for young patients”.

Would you also help those in Ukraine? How does it feel knowing that doctors are aware and helping?

  1. I feel awful to all those in Ukraine suffering from the war, and from other day-to-day issues, whether serious or insignificant. I'm also thankful, however, to all those that are willing to put in time, money, and effort without anything in return in order to help the people of Ukraine who desperately need it.

  2. The situation in Ukraine is crazy, and the fact that so many health associations and medical professionals are helping is heart warming and it helps remind us that people can be good. Of course I would help out those in Ukraine. I am really happy that everyone around the world is helping the Ukrainian people stay healthy during these wartimes.

  3. I would definitely help the people that are in Ukraine getting hurt, killed, getting taken out of their homes for no reason, and more. And i'm glad there are doctors that are there to help.

  4. I would surely assist those in Ukraine who are being injured, killed, or forcibly removed from their homes, among other things. And I'm grateful for the doctors who are willing to assist.
