Hannah Shinder: Week 10- March Madness

Is it just my family, or does anyone else’s family ever have competitions and just need to win? My family always has a March madness competition that is created through ESPN where we create our own brackets and then see who wins the tournament. Somehow, I always seem to win every single year even though I have no idea what I am picking when selecting my bracket before the tournament starts.

Even though I usually choose the teams based on their rankings, there is always an upset. I will randomly choose an upset game hoping that it actually happens since it has never happened before. This year there was history. Purdue, which was ranked 3, had lost to St. Peter’s. They were ranked 15 and no one expected this upset. This was history since they were the first team that was ranked 15 to make it to the elite 8. Everyone was shocked but also happy by this victory.

The tournament hasn’t ended yet, but my family has all gotten out since they have picked either Gonzaga, UConn, or Arizona to win. Not a surprise! My cousin and I are the only ones standing since we both have Duke winning which is shocking since we are the only two that don’t follow March madness at all. But yet again, I always end up winning even though I choose my teams based on like if I like the college or not, and not if they are actually good.

Even though there is so much uncertainty and urge to know who will win, many consider this one of their favorite times of the year. For my family, we love it and take the competitiveness to another level.

Does your family also participate in March madness?

  1. I can not relate to this kind of family competition, but it is actually very sweet that your family does something like this. It makes your family closer and I can imagine the kind of group chat conversations you guys have.

  2. I have always wanted to follow March Madness and make a bracket, but to be honest, I have always been way too lazy to get into it. I always hear people in school talking about what is going on in March Madness and I have always wanted to participate in those conversations because I love sports and watching sports, but I have never gotten into following college basketball.
