Ben Nikpour - Week 8: College is Approaching!

As we are coming towards the end of our Junior year of High School, and college is approaching, the scramble to get everything done is occurring. What I mean by this is, now more than ever, we are focusing on getting our standardized testing done, our extracurriculars completed, and our essays started. For me, college seems exciting, but the work that I have to do to get in is stressful and frightening.

Like many others, the most recent thing I have been doing to prepare for college is taking standardized tests. I have very ambitious goals when it comes to the SAT. I want a very high score, so I have been studying day and night for the past months. I took the SAT on Saturday along with half of the country. I am so nervous to get my scores back, and I am praying for a good score on at least one section so I only have to take the test one more time.

The next thing I have been focusing on is perfecting my extracurricular activities. I have done a lot over the past few years of high school. I am proud of all the achievements and activities I have completed, and now it is time to put it all together on my resume. One paper, front and back, is supposed to show all that I have done in high school; it’s crazy to think about!

Another thing I have been doing is starting my college essays. The essay portion of the application is very important. It is supposed to show who you are as a person. I have been doing a lot of thinking on what my best essay topic would be. While I still do not know what that is, I have come up with a few possible ideas that maybe I will develop into an essay.

The last important thing I have been thinking about recently is scholarships. Affording college is hard, and I would prefer to ease the cost of college with scholarships. I have applied for scholarships daily, and I am hoping I win one!

Overall, I think we all understand the importance of preparing for college; at least, I know we have definitely all felt it. I can’t wait to see where I end up next year!

What have you been doing to prepare for college? Where do you want to go?

Comments

  1. I have just completed my resume so far, and I'll probably end up adding a bit more to a few sections depending on how senior years goes. I am one of the few people that have not really started the standardized testing processes, but I am not worried about it. Personally, I think many people overstress the college process because in previous years many students have not taken it as seriously as they should. I am not really sure where I want to go, but it needs to have some sort of Jewish presence.

  2. I have not done too much to prepare for college besides maintaining good classes and grades. I also am not sure where I want to go to college, I am currently searching. I hope to either major in art or psychology and forensics.

  3. I'm not quite sure where I want to go. However, I definitely want a smaller school when compared to a large state school. I've been preparing by taking the ACT and filling out my resume.
