Ben Nikpour - Week 10: Oscar Viewers are Dropping
Before a few days ago, I did not know much about the Oscars. I knew it was an award show, but besides that, I was basically clueless. It wasn’t until the Will Smith and Chris Rock situation that I spent the time to look into what the Oscars are.
For some background, the Oscars, properly known as the Academy Awards, are awarded to artists in the film industry. The first show was in May of 1929. At its peak, in 1998, the Oscars brought in over 55 million viewers; that same year was the release of one of the biggest movies of all time: Titanic. Since then, viewers have been dropping. In 2020, the Oscars had their lowest amount of viewers with only 24 million people watching the event. In 2021, the Oscars broke their 2020 record of lowest viewers by only bringing in less than 11 million people. This year the Oscars brought in close to 17 million viewers which is an improvement but not by much. Award shows like the Grammys, Emmys, Golden Globes, etc. have seen a similar problem. This puts doubt in my mind about how much longer these shows are going to last.
That being said, over 100 million people have watched the Will Smith and Chris Rock conflict over multiple platforms which makes me wonder if it was just a publicity stunt. Many people suspect that the whole thing was staged to get more people to watch the show. Personally, I completely disagree as the situation is probably damaging for their careers. Publicity stunts aren’t a new thing and can be pretty effective, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the Oscars to put one in their show. While it was effective, if the Will Smith slap was staged, I do not think it was appropriate.
Do you watch the Oscars or other award shows? Do you think the Will Smith and Chris Rock conflict was staged?

I think that this Will Smith and Chris Rock conflict was shocking. They have had past conflicts in the past, and I feel as if Will Smith took it too far to go onto the stage which was on the air, and physically punch Chris Rock. I always watch the Grammys and I saw it happen live and I was in utter shock. I couldn't bring myself to realize that it was actually true and was occurring. There was a debate on whether on not Will Smith should have even received his award, but there were 10 minutes until he was going to be called up onto the stage.
ReplyDeleteI do not watch the Oscars. I don't really know why. I guess I just never really got into it. Regarding the Chris Rock and Will Smith conflict, I do not think that the fight was staged. If it was staged then I don't think Rock would have reacted the way he did. Many people have asked me whether I'm on team Chris or team Will and if I'm going to give an honest answer, I would have to say neither. I think both sides are in the wrong and they both acted inappropriately.
