I don’t know about other people, but every year after we do the annual show for the Drama Department, I get so sad. A week ago we performed our second and last showing of Little Shop of Horrors. This year is a special year because it’s our first year back to doing shows in school, after last year when we couldn’t because of COVID. Initially I was a little hesitant to start the process of rehearsals and learning lines again, after a year of having more time after school when I otherwise wouldn’t because of the show. I found it hard to reconnect with that part of myself that loves performing and everything that comes with it. Additionally, I felt a little out of practice when it came to learning my lines and figuring out how to play my character, Seymour. It’s as if, for a short second, I forgot about that part of me. We started rehearsals 3 months late, in January, because of a number of extenuating circumstances. Honestly, I wasn’t even able to connect with my character until 3 weeks before the show. I personally don’t like Little Shop of Horrors- I still don’t. But I love the way we did it. Those last three weeks felt like I had a reawakening. I remembered how much I love the challenge of being able to pull off a character like Seymour, because the part is more complex than it seems. I had Mrs Adams breathing down my neck until the very last moment, because she wanted me to see what she saw. Seymour isn’t simply some nerd that falls in love with a girl. Little Shop is actually a story about a man who raises a monster and ends up becoming a monster itself. Once I realized that, and how the character changes, I was able to truly connect to the part. From the technical side of production, the crew, students, and parents managed to put together a set whereas we started off with no set to begin with. Mrs Adams and Ms Lang worked their butts off to get a real show up and running. This show, like all the other shows I’ve done at Donna Klein, just comes together at the last second and looks amazing. Every single year, especially this year, I couldn’t see how the show would come together in the end. Somehow, it always does. We ran a great show this year, if I do say so myself. Now that the show’s over and all the excitement is gone, we each have to find a way to keep ourselves going until next year. I can’t wait to see which show we yai dai dai dai do next year! What’s something that you’ve dedicated yourself to and feel really passionate about?
