Avital Horowitz - Week 9 - New Zealand removing pandemic mandates as omicron wanes

Over the next couple of weeks, the country of New Zealand will finally be starting to remove some pandemic mandates after two years. Now that the omicron cases are going down the country is comfortable letting go of some of the mandates.

The prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, announced that people in New Zealand will no longer need to be vaccinated in order to enter public places like the grocery store or restaurants. She also announced that many workers will no longer need to follow the mandate of requiring the vaccine. These workers include waiters, teachers, and police officers. Although, the vaccine will continue to be mandated to health-care providers, border workers, aged-care workers, and corrections officers.

The restriction of outdoor crowds over 100 people is being removed which will begin to allow concerts and sporting events to resume. The indoor crown limit of 100 is being changed to 200 and will soon be gone all together. Unfortunately though, the mask mandate will continue to stay in public transportation, stores, and schools for children over the age of eight years old.

The government also announced that the country will be opening back up to tourists after two long years with the world's most strict border controls. On April 12, tourists from Australia will be welcome to visit New Zealand and on May 1 many other countries will also be welcomed to visit.

  2. It's about time! This should have happened long ago. If you ask me, we as a country need to accept that this virus is going to stick around for awhile, and that we are all most likely going to get it. However, this doesn't mean that I don't respect everyone's decisions. I think everyone should be allowed to be as careful as they want, and as long as they don't impose it on me or others, then it is completely okay.

  3. It's unfortunate that New Zealand had to have such a huge lockdown and strict COVID mandates, however, when the United States and the rest of the world was in that position right in the beginning of the pandemic, New Zealand and Australia had a lot of freedom. Only when people started testing positive for COVID did New Zealand and Australia shut down and enforce strict mandates. I'm happy that their restrictions are being lifted, though.
