Avital Horowitz - Week 10 - The feeling of getting your own car

This past Friday, my dad and I drove to West Palm to pick up my car from the auction. I am going to be honest. I never really thought this day would come. Me and my dad had been searching for a car for months. I was starting to think I was never going to get a car. Whenever we actually found a car it always had some sort of issue that made it so I could not get it. First, I got a Hyundai Equus, but we ended up needing to send it back because there was something wrong with the exhaust. Next, I got a Mazda CX-5, but that got double sold at the auction, so I lost that car. At this point I was starting to kind of lose hope. I came to the conclusion that this was going to take much longer than expected and that I would not get my license anytime soon. I had a bit of a problem. I am turning 17 in a couple weeks and I still do not have my driver's license. You are probably wondering, "Avital why don't you just go get your license in one of your parents' cars?" Well, here's the thing; I can't really do that. My dad has a dealership car and my mom has a rental car, so I did not have a car to drive to the DMV. But after many months of searching we finally found the perfect fit. A Honda CR-V. A safe and comfortable SUV.
Now that I finally do have a car, I can go to the DMV to get my license!

But what does that mean? Like it's weird to think about isn't it. I am finally going to get my license. I will have freedom to go where I went whenever I want. It's an exciting feeling, but it is also kind of scary. It means I'm growing up. I'm getting older. Once I get my license, I instantly obtain hundreds of new responsibilities. That's scary. Having more responsibilities is nerve racking. Getting older is exciting but also sad. It means my childhood has come to an end. An end that I never saw coming. Well, let me rephrase that. I always knew I was going to get older, but I never thought it would come so soon.

Here we are though. Growing up. Getting older. It's exciting, but also scary. Driving is a big step and here I am about to take it. How do you feel about growing up? Did getting your license or the thought of getting your license make you feel older?

  1. Sometimes I fall into a state of mind where I think I don't have my license yet. Time has moved so fast these past three years, and I remember when I was 14 like it was yesterday. Time flies, and we gain new responsibilities each year of our lives. Driving is an incredible privilege, and it's super fun too, so congrats!

  2. Getting my license felt like a big milestone when it happened, but now it is kinda meh. Being able to drive is cool and all but it lost its allure a couple months into having it. Still, I am glad I am able to transport myself without the help of a parent or guardian.
