Atara Berkower - Week 7 - Haitian migrants smuggled on a boat

Haitian migrants smuggled on a boat

A boat carrying 300 Haitian migrants landed in the Florida Keys. The boat that landed in the Keys was a, “maritime smuggling event that made landfall in Ocean Reef, Florida.” The boat was full with no room to walk where 300 people were kept smuggled away. 163 of the 300 Hatioan smugglers swam to the shore and were injured and in need of medical help. This event caused landfall in the Keys of Florida because the boat could not withstand all 300 people without sinking or breaking down.

This is the second time a boat was caught with hundreds of smuggled Hatians in the Bahamas and Florida Keys area. This is not a coincidence and there must be something going on in the Hatian community, causing them to be smuggled and squished on a small boat.

When a small, overweight boat, filled with hundreds of people runs over shallow water, the boat is very likely to tip over and cause landfall. This happened when the boat was in the Florida Keys and many of the Hatian migrants ended up getting injured from the boat tipping over. As the situation is still being observed and the effects are still to be determined, we hope to keep all the Hatians safe.

It is known that the boat contained Hatian smugglers although we do not know why this has happened already twice. Researchers and investigators are determined to figure out why the Hatian people are smuggled on a boat in the Florida Keys and Bahama area.

Have you ever heard of anything like this before? If you have, how does it relate to this situation?

  1. I have never heard of this situation before, but it sounds very interesting. I wonder why these migrants are overloading these boats. This is very dangerous and I hope that the Haitian migrants are all healthy and okay. Hopefully these dangerous incidents don't happen again in the future.

  2. My sister's best friend has a beach house in Key Largo and actually witnessed this boat come ashore with the refugees. It is depressing that these refugees have no other choice except to travel in terrible conditions in the hopes of a better life. I know that in some situations the government seeks to deport refugees back to their home country, but I hope this does not happen to these refugees and they are able to live better lives here in the United States.
