Ariella Green Week 21: Hebrew School
It is hard for me to believe that just a few months ago I began to teach at Hebrew School on Sundays. When I was offered the position, I did not know whether I should accept it because it would mean having to wake up earlier on Sunday morning. I am so glad that I took the job because it gave me the opportunity to create such strong bonds with my students. Each day has its moments, but overall, I have enjoyed nearly every minute of it.
It has been quite a learning experience for me since it is my first year teaching. I have learned that first graders are really funny, they love to do hands-on activities, and a little sugar goes a long way.
Nearly every lesson my students have some funny remark and the most memorable one is when they mention non-Jewish Purim in the classroom. Also, I like to incorporate lessons involving food in the classroom, especially candy. However, 6-7 years olds pumped with sugar are not fun to teach.
Hebrew school is very interesting to me because for me, it is normal to go to Jewish school everyday. I am so used to attending Judaics class or speaking Hebrew. This is the only time in my students’ lives where they will be learning about Judaism and our intention as teachers is for them to love being Jewish. Every minute at Hebrew School counts because for some people two and a half hours may seem like a long time, but it’s really not for once a week.
Question: How was your life affected by attending a Jewish day school for most of your life? How do you think your life would be different had you not?
My life has definitely been affected by attending a Jewish day school. I have been in three different schools, all of which are Jewish. Attending a Jewish day school means that I have grown up with Jewish values and learning about Jewish holidays, traditions, and stories, as well as Hebrew. I would be a different person and have a different outlook on life if I had not attended a Jewish school.
