Ariella Green Week 18: Don’t Say Gay
Currently, in our very own sunshine state, the Florida House of Republicans, are attempting to pass the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. This bill, led by Joe Harding, will prohibit children in kindergarten through third grade from learning about the LGBTQ community. Joe Harding states that the reasoning behind the bill is because the material is “not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students”. The legislation is meant to prevent the incorporation of sexual orientation and gender identity into the public schools’ curriculum. If students feel the need to discuss with their teachers about this topic, they are allowed to, however, it will not be incorporated into the teacher’s lesson plan. Supporters of the bill feel that it should apply to all grade levels because they feel that the topic is inappropriate, especially in a school setting.
The Democrats feel that the bill demonizes the LGBTQ community and targets the LGBTQ students. President Biden has even spoken out about the bill calling it “hateful”. Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith, who is gay, feels targeted by this bill because it makes people apart of the community a taboo.
I feel that this is a sensitive topic today for some people and families. When all is said and done, I feel that it is a parent’s decision to choose what they will expose their young children to. I firmly believe that the school systems should include lessons about loving others as you love yourself, but it does not have to explicitly be about the LGBTQ community for the younger students.
I agree with you. I also think that the school system should include lesson on loving others and yourself, but that does not have to explicitly be about the LGBTQ. I don't think that the subject should be prohibited, but I also don't think it has to be required. The topic of loving others and yourself should be a part of the curriculum, but it does not have to be specifically to the LGBTQ community or not, it can be about love in general.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in the sense that our school systems should include lessons about loving others and yourself not just explicitly about the LGBTQ community, but the this bill would not allow sexual orientation and gender identity to be part of any curriculum at all. This bill, which has now passed through the state senate, seems homophobic in disguise. The Florida Congress should be worrying about more important issues rather than passing unnecessary bills.

ReplyDeleteSchools do not need to change their curriculum to target a certain audience. This comes into play with the bill being passed. If the LGBTQ topic has come up in a classroom it is okay to educate the students although we should not be targeting LGTBQ education to the students because it will involve the kids too much in the topic. The topic of loving others should be mentioned although it should not focus only on the LGBTQ community.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy. I think that this topic is becoming more and more important as time goes on. I disagree with the bill completely because I think that everyone should be able to fully express who they are and that people should be educated about these things. Just like you wrote in your blog, it doesn't need to be explicitly talking about the LGBTQ community, but just about loving yourself and others.
