Adi Chaham week 21- The Beach
As a child, I hated the beach. The sand. The dirtiness. The ocean. Everything about the beach I despised. However, I live with a family of beach-lovers. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, my parents wake up early to go on a walk on the beach. While my siblings could go and spend the entire day at the beach, from 10am until the sun sets.
Growing up, my family and I would go to the beach a lot. As a matter of fact, almost every weekend we would spend either Saturday or Sunday at the beach. While my older sister would be tanning and getting all sunburnt, sitting in the burning sun, I would sit in the shade with a hat on, not understanding why my sister would do this to herself while the rest of my family would be in the ocean.
However, as I grew older, I started appreciating the ocean itself. I still couldn’t stand the sand and getting dirty, but I loved going into the water and playing with the waves, especially jumping with them.
Over time, my relationship with the beach has changed mainly due to the lack of activities in Boca Raton and my summers in Israel. The activities in Florida consist of mainly three activities: eating, shopping or going to the beach. Therefore, if I'm not hungry and don’t want to buy stuff, my only option is to go to the beach. In addition, I spend my summers in Israel and the majority of the time, at the beach in Tel-Aviv. So, overtime, I have learned to somewhat enjoy it. Weirdly so, I started to not enjoy the water in the ocean so much as I would rather sit on one of the tanning beds and get tan or at times, sunburnt.
Nowadays, I am actually excited to go to the beach. Recently I have been going to the beach more often and the weather has been amazing. It feels weird to say that I don’t mind the beach, but honestly, it's not terrible. I still don;t like the sand and don’t really go into the water, but, sitting at the beach, getting tan or sunburnt while listening to music, getting acai bowls and then taking the most refreshing shower of your life, is so much fun.
As a child, did you enjoy the beach? Has your relationship with the beach changed over time? How often do you go to the beach?
I have always loved the beach. I used to just think of the beach as a fun place, but now that I am into fishing, when I go to the beach I think of what's in the water and how to catch it, rather than just going for fun. I guess that's just my craziness though!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember a time where I didn't like the beach. Growing up in NJ, we didn't go to the beach that often. Now that I have moved to Florida, it feels like we are there ever day; I was even there on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteFor the past year, I have been trying to go to the beach once or twice a week, and I used to not go at all. I feel that even though we live right by it, no one ever goes anymore and kind of takes it for granted.
