Adi Chaham week 20- Earthquake Hits Japan

On Wednesday, 11 am eastern time or almost midnight Thursday Japan time, a massive earthquake struck near the coast of Fukushima near Namie, Japan. The massive 7.3 magnitude earthquake that upgraded to a 7.4 magnitude quake on Thursday eastern time, caused blackouts and a massive 1-meter high tsunami. The 2-minute earthquake that took place at exactly 11:36 pm Japan time, caused fear throughout Japan and its 47 prefectures following the devastating earthquake that took place in 2011.

The intensity of the earthquake that took place on Wednesday had an intensity similar to the Kobe earthquake of 1995 however, the Kobe earthquake killed more than 6,000 people. Unlike Kobe, this earthquake had fewer deaths and injuries. According to initial reports, there were no injuries, deaths, or severe damage from the initial earthquake. By the end of the earthquake, and following the aftershocks there were reports of 7 injured and most recently, there have been reports of 4 deaths and over 90 people injured. Prime minister Fumio Kishida has announced that the cause of deaths will be investigated.

The 7.4 magnitude earthquake had a 60km preliminary epicenter depth creating the tsunami. Together, the two caused over 2.2 million home blackouts across 14 different prefectures (out of the 47) and the suspension of numerous train lines.

Eleven years ago, Namie Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake. It was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake that was deadly, causing several nuclear plant meltdowns. On March 11, 2011, 20,000 died, and a tsunami was formed. The tsunami destroyed several buildings and towns and was the destroyer of the nuclear power plant and the death of the people. Post-earthquake life, half a million people were displaced and over $300 billion was spent to fix the destruction, not including the fixing of the plants.

Scared after the earthquake that occurred 11 years ago, 49 thousand people were told to evacuate the Miyagi area, and safety precautions have been taken to make sure no risk is taken before the earthquake is completely over. One of the safety precautions includes the investigation of the nuclear power plant. Thankfully, no issues have been detected with either the power plant of Onagawa or the Fukushima power plant. What did occur though, was a fire alarm that went off inside one of the buildings. For now, there have been no reports of a fire and everything seems to be fine but, the government continues to closely watch the nuclear power plants to make sure no damage will be done.

What do you guys think about this horrible earthquake? Have you ever been through an earthquake or tsunami?
