Adi Chaham week 18- Donations to Ukrainians Through Airbnb

During this difficult time for Ukrainians, people around the world are doing many things to help. Recently,  people around the globe have begun using Airbnb as a means of direct donations. As of Friday, March 4th, more than 61,400 nights have been booked in Ukraine through Airbnb as a part of the social-media-led movement to send money to Ukrainian Airbnb hosts. This movement began shortly after Airbnb announced that it was teaming up with nonprofit Aibnb.org and its hosts to help house up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees for free.

As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues, these people have no intention to stay at these Airbnbs; rather the goal of this movement was to give money to these Ukrainian individuals directly. To help the effort, Airbnb has removed all guest and host fees for all bookings in Ukraine temporarily.

As Notre Dame law professor Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer has said, there are both advantages and disadvantages of using Airbnb as means for fundraising. While “it does appear to get money to individual Ukrainians very quickly”, “you could give to people who don’t need it as much as others”. Therefore, donating through Airbnb may not be as helpful as donating to some sort of other charity.

As word is spreading about this Airbnb fundraiser as a means of helping the effort, there could be fraud accounts who seek to get money out of this fundraiser who either don’t need it or don’t live in Ukraine. However, many have argued that since Airbnb is a popular platform created a long time ago, the risks of fraud are less likely. Despite this, many people who have used this method to donate have insisted that they have taken the time to check that the people getting the donations are reliable, legit and active accounts.

If you were to donate to Ukraine, would you donate by booking a night/ a few nights on Airbnb?

  1. It is great to hear that so many people want to help out. This is a great idea by Airbnb, if I were on break right now, I would definitely consider booking a few night on Airbnb!
