Adam Sobel Week 21 - Weird Slang Words
Every day, many new terms and words appear in popular culture. They are typically referred to as "slang" words. These new words are frequently quickly adopted into our language and used on a day to day basis. Some of them make sense and can add depth to your conversation, but some of them are confusing and don't make sense. These ones often don't make sense as to how they got popularized, and I wanted to go over many of the ones that don't make sense.
The first one that confuses me is "chicken legs". This term usually refers to skinny people, but chicken legs are far from skinny. They are known for being meaty which is why they are so popular for eating. Additionally, because of how many people have seen a chicken leg and know that they are by no means "skinny", it amazes me that this word became popularized to describe skinny people.
Next is the term "socking" which refers to punching someone really hard. But, while the term means that you want to severely hurt someone, the item that it is based on (socks) is one of the softest and most harmless objects someone could find in their household. Why this would refer to punching someone doesn't make sense at all. I could maybe understand if it was called "gloving" because that at least relates to your hands, but socks and punching have no correlation with each other at all.
"Nuts" is another weird slang term, usually referring to someone that acts crazy or wild. But, again, this word has nothing to do with what it describes. Nuts are one of the most relaxing or boring snacks, and using them to describe someone or something exciting or exhilarating is awkward.
Lastly, "drip" is a slang word that talks about someone who dresses well or with fancy/expensive clothing. However, drip just remains me of water or rain, and that just makes me think that someone looks like they got wet. How that has any relation to clothes confuses me even more, because wet clothes tend to look wrinkly and soppy, and they can be uncomfortable as well.
These terms all describe something that is the opposite of what the slang version of it means. How they become popularized really confuses me, but the internet is weird and they are also just words. Some of them are also fun to say sometimes.
What slang words do you think are weird or contradictory?

Many "slang" words do not make sense, although I hear it so much that I become accustomed to say it. Another slang word is "lit". It does not make sense although I am guilty for saying it in certain situations.
ReplyDeleteI think slang words are fun, but they can definitely be confusing at times. One that makes no sense to me is the word "sick" being used in place of the word "cool''. It is so weird.
ReplyDeleteI really like the slang word bet, it's much more fun than saying yeah or sure. Come to think of it I have no clue where chicken legs came from because you are so right... chicken legs aren't skinny what?
ReplyDeleteI like slang words because they are fun to use with friends especially if you are trying to talk about something you don't want other people to know what the word means or what you are talking about, so you come up with a random term.
