Adam Sobel Week 20 - Russian-Chinese Relations
Last Thursday, the US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said that the US would punish China if they decided to give military or monetary aid to Russia for the war in Ukraine. Russian forces here have killed many civilians, but Ukrainian soldiers are barely hanging on, so the US wants to prevent Russia from getting any support to help them take over Ukraine. Blinken also said that President Biden and Xi Jingping, the leader of China, would speak the next day to address the responsibility for the actions that China may or may not take.
China has supported Russia for their attack and also met with them two weeks before for unknown reasons. Additionally, Russia has asked China for support after they began their invasion on February 24th. They requested surface to air missiles, drones, armored vehicles, logistics vehicles, and intelligence-related equipment. Additionally, the former Soviet Union and China had an alliance during the Cold War and they have relations today that make them potentially dangerous when working together. They are both very strong powers and their military co-operations could be a powerful force to stop. Many have speculated that they are going to support each other in Russia taking over more of Eastern Europe, China taking back Taiwan and other Asian countries, and Iran joining in as well to take over Israel.
China has currently portrayed themselves as a neutral arbiter, and they haven't condemned Russia at all for their actions.
Do you think China will provide aid to Russia? Do you think more invasions could occur from Russia's allies?

I think China is stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, they are a neighboring country to Russia and are likely pressured by them to join the war effort, however they are also being threatened by Western countries not to join an alliance. Additionally, I think that China is paying extremely close attention to what is happening in Russia and what the West will do in response. If Russia is somehow able to take Ukraine without retaliation, I believe that China would attack Taiwan as they see there is no repercussions.
