Rosalie Weiss- Week 4- I Don’t Like Toy Story 4

Toy Story 3 left the franchise on such a perfect note. The toys ending their journey with Andy while finding a new home with Bonnie is such a perfect ending, as it gives the franchise a new beginning without changing the basic structure of the story too much. They may have a new owner, but at least they are all together. This idea that nothing matters as long as you are with your friends is very prominent in the movie, serving as its main message. Woody even chose to stay with his friends and live with Bonnie rather than leaving them and going to college with Andy, something he really wanted to do. All of this is why I hate Toy Story 4 so much, as it does the exact opposite of all of these things.
Toy Story 4 ends with Woody, the main character, leaving his friends because Bonnie didn't need him anymore. Instead, he chooses to live with Bo Peep, his love interest, as a free toy in the playground. This choice completely goes against the messages of the importance of friendship in the previous movies and Woody’s past behavior when in similar situations. It is also an extremely selfish choice regardless of whether Buz said it was okay or not. Not only is he leaving his friends to never see them again, but he is also leaving Bonnie. Even though we are told that Bonnie doesn’t need Woody anymore, who says that she won't need him in the future? Bonnie loved Woody in the previous movie and might be sad when she learns that she lost him. All of these things make the movie so unnecessary, and the franchise would be better without it.
On its own, Toy Story 4 might be a good movie. I just can't get over how incongruous it feels next to the other movies.
What do you think? Did you like Toy Story 4?
