Rosalie Weiss- Week 2- Don’t Look Up Review (spoilers)

Don’t Look Up was released by Netflix on December 5, 2021. It was directed by Adam Mckay and starred many big names, including Leonardo Dicaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep. In this black comedy, we follow two astronomers attempting to save the world from a comet hurtling towards earth, while humanity doesn't seem to care. The movie calls out politicians who refuse to take action on real-world issues, with the comet serving as a metaphor for climate change. People have also pointed out parallels between the movie and the pandemic.
Despite its success and popularity, seemingly everyone hated the movie. People critiqued everything about the movie, but the most common complaint I saw was that the message was tired and too on the nose. While I don't disagree with this, I don’t see why it is such a problem. Even though the movie is not the first to highlight specific issues, it does so on the largest scale, with its star-studded cast bringing in hundreds of millions of viewers. It would also defeat the purpose of the movie if the message was so complex that many viewers didn't get it. The movie successfully raised awareness about climate change by clearly presenting its message to a large audience.
I genuinely enjoyed this movie, and while it wasn't perfect, it had some great moments. The foreshadowing of Meryl Streep’s death was hilarious, and the moment when the family knew they were going to die but pretended everything was fine killed me. It may not be a profound, complex masterpiece like Pitch Perfect, but Don’t Look Up is a good movie.
