On Tuesday, 2/22/22, Peruvian archeologists dug up the remains of eight children and 12 adults from beneath the soil in Peru. According to experts, these bodies were victims of sacrifice around 800 to 1,200 years ago. The bodies were found in a major digging site at the pre-Incan Cajamarquilla complex east of Lima. The bodies were found in an underground tomb, and an ancient mummy was actually found in the same location last November by the team at San Marcos University. Expert Archeologist Pieter Van Dalen believes the newly found sacrifice victims were put in place in order to accompany the mummy. This is because their ancient culture believed "the souls of the dead became protectors of the living" (Aquino). The tomb itself is said to be belonging to that of the Lord of Sipan, a ruler from over 1,700 years ago. The mummified man, himself, is said to have been approximately 35 years old. Along with various funeral items, there were musical artifacts and instruments such as the "zampona," and this was a wind instrument used in the ancient Andean tradition.

Peru is known to have hundreds of archeological sites throughout the country. These sites date back thousands of years, and they stretch from the time period of the Andean peoples to the Incan Empire 500 years ago. Uncovering history from the past is very important to understand our roots and where we came from. Discoveries as such help us connect the dots in our past, and better answer unanswered questions. Discoveries like this get me curious about what humans were truly like thousands of years ago. Through seeing our evolution in the past, we can further progress in the future because our understanding grows. It is very important that we can gain more of an understanding of our past in order to see the full picture and become greater as a species and a people.

What do you think? Should archeological discoveries be emphasized more? Are they as important as they are interesting? How does this shape us as people in today's world?

  2. I think that archeological discoveries can be really cool and interesting because they teach us not only about the land but also the people, plants, and animals that occupied the land from a few thousand years ago to a few billion years ago.
