Noah Bard - Week 5: U.S. - Russia meeting is off as tensions rise

For weeks now, the United States has been pushing for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine. There was a sign of hope when the U.S. The Secretary of State announced that there would be a meeting held between the U.S. and Russia. This meeting was contingent on one key condition, that Putin would hold back his troops and not invade Ukraine. Although as some expected, Putin did not live up to his side of the “deal”.

Over the last week, while this meeting was still planned, Putin had been executing deceiving actions. He said that certain groups of Russian troops were relocating away from the border, yet he then recognized two seperatist regions in Ukraine. The U.S. denied that troops were being relocated, so both these actions were viewed as hostile. This caused the U.S. The Secretary of State called off the meeting stating that “ it would not be productive and that Russia’s actions indicated Moscow was not serious about a peaceful path to resolving the crisis.”

With Ukraine steering off the path to peace, the U.S. has also started to punish Russia in several different ways. Although Biden has held off from enacting the harshest sanctions possible, which would cause Russia major turmoil, he has still executed some economic restraints. He enacted an export ban that will cost Russia information for its military, and reinforced the hold that Germany has on the Nord 2 pipeline.

Overall, Russia doesn’t seem to have any diplomatic solution in mind, as their meeting with Blinken would’ve been the perfect opportunity. It looks as if either Russia will invade, or they will get scared off by the U.S and the rest of NATO.

We can’t predict the future, but what do you think will happen? WWIII?

  1. Hopefully, no war will break out between us and Russia, but if it does they will draft us Americans starting at 18 to fight for our country which is pretty scary if you ask me, and nobody wants to go through that situation again.

  2. I have no clue. This is such a fragile topic and issue going on as we speak, so anything could happen. We will have to see what goes on. I know that Russia has begun invading Ukraine and that does not seem like a step in the right path, and away from WWIII. I hope WWIII will not happen, it would not be a positive thing for anyone.

  3. I have no idea what will happen next relating to this war. The situation is obviously bad and I hope it is resolved soon. I hope that this does not become WWIII but you never know.
