Michael Hakim Week 5 - Biden Officially Announces New Penalties Toward Russia as Ukraine Invasion Officially Begins

On Tuesday, February 22, President Biden officially announced that he would be imposing sanctions on Russia as they didn’t listen to his request to not invade Ukraine. As a response to Putin invading Ukraine with “peacekeeping” forces, Biden said, “This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine ... so I'm going to begin to impose sanctions in response.”

According to Biden, these sanctions will include “cut[ting] off Russia's government from western financing,” and according to a White House official, they would be "swift and severe."

Biden has also ordered the United States to move already-deployed forces in Europe to NATO countries that are on Russia’s western border. This is a direct response to Putin refusing to withdraw troops from Belarus, and are meant to show countries like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania that they will be safe pending a Russian invasion.

Biden described these moves as “totally defensive” and made clear that the United States has “no intention of fighting Russia.” Also, the meeting that was originally scheduled between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Sergey Lavrov will now be canceled, as the invasion is happening and “it does not make sense to go forward with that meeting at this time.” This was agreed upon by all of the United States’ allies.

This invasion has also had impacts in other countries such as Germany, where the Nord Stream 2 pipeline has been halted, and though Biden originally thought he would make a decision on this, Germany had the final say.

Do you think this is a good move by the United States? Why or why not?

  1. I think we should do anything possible to get involved with the innocent civilians that are caught between the crossfire. Anything that we can do for civilian lives should be done, but in terms of government, I don't believe anyone should get involved. No one, and I mean no one, wants a War right now, so as long as the civilians are safe, I say others shouldn't get involved.

  2. I think we should everything in our power to stop the U.S. from entering the war with a military point of view. However, what's happening in Ukraine is extremely sad and unfortunate. Therefore, the sanctions being put on Russia are good.
