Maya Garaway Week 14 - The Spiderman of the Art World Art Exhibit
In advance, I am sorry to all the Marvel fans for the title of my blog post. This is not your Spiderman in this post, even though I thought the same thing and was how I found this article. Instead, this is of the Spiderman of the art world, Tomas Saraceno.
Tomas Saraceno is an artist who lives in an extremely polluted area of Berlin. The issue of pollution is a critical concern to the point that he was advised not to plant any trees because “people will eat an apple and be poisoned.” His artwork is heavily influenced by his home town and the issue of pollution. Tomas Saraceno both creates art and researches these enviornmental issues at the same time.
On February 11th, Tomas’s new exhibit, “Particular Matter(s)”, opens at The Shed in New York. The most encaptivating piece from this exhibit is called “Free The Air.” This art installation is what gives Tomas Saraceno the name of Art Spiderman. This piece is designed of two metal spiderwebs which are both suspended in the air. The first web is 95 feet in diameter and 40 feet above the ground. The other one has a diameter of 48 feet and is suspended 12 feet in the air. The purpose of this installation is to share experiences with a spider and nature. This goal is achieved through the dim lighting to mimic the spiders visions and the vibrations sent throughout the web.
As an artist I love the work of Tomas Saraceno. He has so many diverse skills from inking to architecture. The theme of nature and pollution is so moving and clearly evident in his works as well which makes his art more detailed. What are your opinions on this new exhibit and are there any causes you are also passionate about?

Wow, his art is so fascinating thank you so much for sharing this. I'm wondering how long it takes for the spiders to actually make all those webs though? How does he manage them? He has an installation at the SFMOMA so next time I go there I'll definitely keep an eye open for it.
