Maya Garaway Week 13: Sticker Making: Dos and Don'ts

I love stickers. I know I sound like a child, but I love stickers. Stickers are so much fun to use and find, especially ones designed by small art businesses that customize their own. Those are my favorite types of stickers. I've always been inspired by these types of artists and about a year ago I got my Cricut machine, which makes stickers. Recently, I had quite an… adventure trying to use the machine, but it was worth it. So today’s blog post is me sharing my mistakes and reflecting on sticker making: dos and don’ts.

To make stickers, the process is quite simple in theory. First, you design a sticker and upload it to the Cricut app. Next, you print the sticker onto sticker paper using a regular printer. Then, you load the paper into the Cricut and it will cut out the sticker with smooth edges, and then bam! You have your sticker! I wish it was that easy.

My goal was to create a pack of penguin stickers. It started off really well! I had the sketch and the design, I got it uploaded to the Cricut app, but then it was time to print. Number one lesson from my story; Make sure the sticker paper is facing upwards! The number of times I sat at my printer trying to print the stickers on the right side made me disappointed in myself. Finally, I got the paper printed so it worked out, almost. Then it was time to have the Cricut cut out the sticker. Lesson number two; test the machine first! The machine wasn't cutting the paper correctly and ruined the sticker sheet that I worked so hard to print on the correct side. Luckily, the machine was an easy fix. Apparently, the blade for the machine wasn't sharp enough so after a quick youtube search I found the solution which brings me to the next learning point. Lesson three! To sharpen a Cricut blade carefully poke a ball of tinfoil until it can easily cut through paper. I was so confident at this point. I believed I just had to print one more paper for all the problems would be gone. I was ready for my penguin stickers. Unfortunately, my printer wasn't. Lesson four (which refers to one)! Don't try to print sticker paper on the wrong side, you could run low on ink. Thankfully, I had enough ink left to create the penguin stickers and it all worked out! I felt very accomplished.

Have you ever constantly faced a struggle while completing a task? How did you stay determined?

  1. Wow, those stickers are really cool, you are very talented! I have faced many struggles when completing tasks. Something that comes to mind is music production. If I am ever having an off-day and can't come up with melodies or drum patterns, I usually listen to songs I like and it helps to inspire me.

  2. I have been struggling in art recently as I have been having trouble making some things look the way I want them to. The main thing that keeps me determined are the due dates (which I normally miss). Sometimes I take breaks to refresh my mind and possible see things from a different angle.
