Lindsey Maschler Week 13: Summer Programs

Summer is the one time of the year when a lot of kids in the US do not have school. The one time where we are able to actually relax and enjoy life without other major stressors. In my experience, 5 months before summer actually happens is when I think the most about it. I am constantly thinking that I want summer to happen already, but I am also constantly worrying about how I want to spend my summer.

From the summer after first grade to the summer before 9th grade, I have spent my entire in a sleep-away camp called Blue Ridge. But once Covid happened, I stopped going. The summer before 10th grade, I had no plans, which was a first. I have never had more than 2 weeks with nothing to do over the summer. It was also especially weird since my birthday is over the summer, and I hadn’t been home for my birthday since Kindergarten. Plus on top of that, I have a twin brother, so I obviously share my birthday. So from going to spending my birthday with only my friends in camp, not in contact with anyone in my “real life” back home, and to suddenly be home for my birthday and share it with my brother, I was shocked.

Last year, I went on a teen tour to the Keys, where I made friends that I still talk to. However, this year, I am doing something completely new. I am doing a pre-college program at UC San Diego. I was constantly going back and forth with what I wanted to do and applied to a couple of different programs, but a couple of days ago I heard back from UC San Diego and got into the program. Before this past month, I have never realized just how many options there are for the summer, between camps and pre-college programs and teen tours. Do you know what you are doing this summer?
