Liam Meldung - Week 16, Ahmaud Arbery's Murder
Even though we might think that nowadays, as a society, we are not racist there are still cases in our countries and our world that prove otherwise. In Brunswick, Georgia a black man by the name of Ahmaud Arbery was chased down and murdered by three men the McMichael’s. After a long time made up of trials and jury deliberations the men were found guilty.
The men chased down Arbery and cornered him with their truck. When he had nowhere to go, Travis McMichael, one of the two men shot him. The other recorded the whole thing. It took two months for the men to be taken to court and tried for their actions. The defense’s case was that the men were simply trying to protect their neighborhood because they thought that Arbery was up to no good. They denied the fact that the men did this out of racist beliefs. The prosecution’s case was that the men were being racist and targeted Arbery for that reason. They even had a specialist FBI agent testify. He explained that in the video they were shouting racial slurs at Arbery. He also went further by testifying that Travis, one of the men, allegedly advocated for violence against Black people, and Bryan, another one of the men, sent racist messages on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The men received life sentences with one exception for Bryan who would have a chance of parole in 30 years.
The whole situation was crazy and upsetting. The fact that hate crimes like these are still going on to this day. After everything we went through with George Floyd, the protests, and so much more, how could this happen again?
What do you guys think about this whole event? Why do you think that even after everything that we went through this year these types of things still happen?
I think that it is super upsetting that hate actions still occur today. My brother in college is next to a row of fraternities, and one of them made the new recruits do and say antisemitic things. It's upsetting that this is the world that we live in and that we will have to go out and face, whether we are a minority or not. Why people can't just leave others alone I'll never really understand because this hatred is so unfair, unnecessary, and unfounded.
