Liam Meldung - Week 14, Irish Doctor Makes History in 2022 Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics have begun and everyone is super excited. Winter sports played all over the world are being played on a large scale with the prizes, as we all know, being a gold medal, silver medal, or bronze medal for your country. The Olympics, whether it’s summer or winter, are always fun to watch. As a Canadian I try to root for Canada whenever they are playing, and of course then we have Israel, and then America. This year Elsa Desmond, a woman from Ireland, made history.

Elsa Desmond is a doctor in Ireland who has been training for quite some time to be able to compete in the Olympics in the luge competition. Of course as a doctor it isn’t super easy to take off work and training for the Olympics takes a lot of time and effort, but Desmond did it. She trained for the Olympics and studied for her job as a doctor at the same time.

Her biggest issue she had to overcome was that she had to create her own new luge federation in Ireland because they never had one. Ireland never competed in the luge competitions in the Olympics before Desmond arrived.

Desmond went into the race knowing she would work her hardest and do her best and would be happy no matter the results. When she raced she was placed 26th, dead last. Even though she was the last person to cross the line she was still smiling and held her hands up in the air out of excitement. Desmond quotes the founder of the modern Olympics and says “It’s not about who wins, it’s about the fight to get there”. She explains that this quote was her journey to being a part of this Olympic event. She worked hard to get where she did and even though she didn’t win she was happy. As the icing on the cake Desmond was given the honor of being one of two flag bearers for Ireland during opening ceremonies.

What do you think about her story? Does it inspire you in any way? Have you ever put so much effort into something and didn’t “win”, but were still happy in the end

  1. I think that Desmond's story is very inspiring. She worked really hard to represent her country in the olympics in a sport she probably didn't have much experience in. She trained long and hard and even though she didn't win, she kept her head up high and smiled. I think this is something that we should all do as there are many times where we train and fail, but we should still be proud that we tried.

  2. I think this is an amazing story, and I really like the quote that Desmond stated. Using that quote, Desmond really is a winner because of how hard she worked to compete at the highest level.

  3. This story is very inspiring. I agree with her mindset that it's not about how you do, but how hard you worked to get there. Participating in the olympics is a great accomplishment itself, regardless of what she placed.
