Leah Week 5 - Russian Troops Ordered to Eastern Ukraine

On Monday, February 21, 2022, Russian troops were told to invade Ukraine by the Russian President Vladimir Putin. This occurred a few hours after Putin’s acceptance of the independence of two Moscow-backed areas in the east of Ukraine. There was already a large amount of tension between Russia and Ukraine, so this order will only fuel the fire, making the situation worse.

In his speech, President Putin claimed that ordering Russian troops into Ukraine was done as a “peacekeeping” for both nations, despite the recent independence of the Ukrainian regions. Putin’s actions were quickly noticed by the United States and its European allies as deliberate in order to push for war with Ukraine. This forced the United States and European Union to place harsh threats of punishments on the two regions.

I think that the United States and the European Union were right to threaten President Putin, since war should be avoided wherever possible. War always results in destruction, deaths, and injuries that can be prevented with alternative methods to solving conflict. Also, it doesn’t make sense to me why sending Russian troops to Ukraine is a “peacekeeping,” especially just after the official independence of the two Moscow-backed regions.

What do you think about President Putin’s actions as well as the United States and European Union’s way of handling it? Do you agree with me, or do you think that President Putin did actually send his Russian troops to Ukraine for the sake of peace? Also, do you think that the United States and the European Union were right to get involved, or should they have stayed out of Russia and Ukraine’s conflict?

  1. I completely agree with your idea that the United States and the European Union were right to threaten President Putin since war should be avoided wherever possible. I think that they were right to get involved since we have a strong military and government in which we can help in any situation. It is saddening to see that such war like this may occur but hopefully, this doesn’t happen.

  2. This is scary stuff. Russia and the U.S are the two superpowers of the world, and they both possess weapons of mass destruction. If things get out of hand, this could mean for another world wide war. Hopefully, things de-escalate, especially because we could potentially get drafted when we soon turn 18.

  3. Things that are happening in the world right now is crazy, including this. I am hoping for no war, obviously, but I am not sure what will happen.
