Hannah Shinder- Week 5: Teachers Consider Leaving Classrooms
One of the most difficult times for teachers has been recently due to not only overcoming pandemic struggles within the classroom but also not being treated the same anymore. Teachers aren’t blaming the stress and struggles on the pandemic, but they are saying that it definitely increased their awakening on how they are treated.
Many teachers feel as if they are devoting so much time to come up with their own curriculum since so much of what they are given by the school is ancient. One teacher says that when they opened up a textbook given, it was ancient Spanish that can’t really be taught today anymore. This is saddening to hear since as a student, I want the curriculum to be the best possible so that I can learn to the fullest. Imagine. Imagine if a teacher was like this one mentioned and just taught the old curriculum that wasn’t relevant anymore.
Teachers have a lot on their plates. Their mental health always comes first in situations. According to the article, recently, many teachers have been facing mental health battles like headaches and heart palpitations. This issue is due to the amount of stress they are faced with on a day-to-day basis. For example, teachers do not only have to deal with their own classes, but they are also covering for other teachers. If one teacher doesn’t plan correctly, it backs up the rest of the teacher's day, just like a domino effect.
A study was tested to see how teachers feel about staying in the educational field. “More than half of teachers (55%) surveyed last month by the National Education Association say they will leave education earlier than they had planned.” This shows how teachers have not been able to enjoy what they thought they would enjoy doing for a living. This stress is affecting teachers financially and mentally which is not anyone's intention.
Do you feel as if teachers are getting treated unfairly?
