Hannah Shinder- Week 3: People Arrested For Sending Things To a Prison
There are many takeaways to people having possession of drones, but there can also be negatives especially when the wrong people have possession of this object. This past week, many people were found guilty as they used drones to send over 100 pounds of contraband to a prison in South Carolina.
This certain event occurred in May of 2021 and it took eight months to investigate. This past Thursday was when the Lee County Sheriff's Office had announced that there were "frequent nighttime drone assaults". According to CBS, officials found “...100 pounds of tobacco, 13 pounds of marijuana, 843 grams of methamphetamines, 114 grams of crack cocaine, 49 grams of cocaine, 12 drones, three guns, two knives, 25 cellphones and $6,393 in cash.” Additionally, they found a drone in the woods near the prison that had 100 grams of meth and five pounds of tobacco. Not only was there one group of people that were trying to fly drones with contraband, but there was also another group trying the do the same thing. They were caught and are facing charges in prison.
I think that this is a terrible event. The fact that people are using drones in the wrong way to do illegal manners is horrible to even hear about. People are in prison for certain circumstances and these 20 people who they found involved in the incident now also are going to jail.
Did you ever think that humans would use drones in this way?

I have never heard of a drone being used to transport illegal substances. I would never thing that someone could successfully do this. A drone is something that is supposed to photograph something in a positive way. Drones should not be used in this way, and hopefully now that we have seen this happen we could put a ban to it.
ReplyDeleteI do think those people wouldn't be the only people to use drones to do something like this, other people have probably thought or have done this already, but haven't got caught.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I am not surprised. There was once a prison outbreak near my old sleep away camp and shortly before there are videos of people sending supplies over the prison wall in the middle of a news report. So the fact that they are using a drone is not surprising.
ReplyDeleteI always felt that drones were supposed to be a fun and new invention, but I am not super surprised at this event. When I think about drones I think about how companies may use them in the future to send things to people's houses. It's similar to this case because even though the package being delivered is drugs they are still using drones to send supplies to people. I don't want to justify this behavior because it's terrible, but that's why I'm not surprised about this whole situation.
