 Two Years: Alone and Mummified

According to government statistics, about 40% of over-75-year-olds in Italy live alone, and the same amount says they have no one to turn to in times of need

More than two years after her death, authorities in Italy discovered the mummified bones of a 70-year-old lady sitting at a table, spurring demands for improved elder care in the country. Marinella Beretta, who had no remaining relatives, was discovered at her home in Prestino, northern Italy, near Lake Como. Police discovered her remains while making a house call in Lombardy during heavy gusts that threatened to uproot neglected trees in her yard. According to Italian media sources, she has not been seen by neighbors in at least two and a half years. The neighbors, who hadn't seen Beretta since September 2019, imagined she'd gone away before the coronavirus epidemic struck northern Italy in 2020, according to the reports. On the front page of Italy's largest selling newspaper, the Corriere Della Sera, editorialist Massimo Gramellini wrote, "Beretta was loneliness personified. "Many of us remember the chaotic, tangled families of rural Italy. Instead, the contemporary family is being whittled down... People pass away alone. And, to make matters worse, we live alone " He stated.

"The real sadness is not that the others did not notice her death. It is that they did not realize Marinella Beretta was alive."

What can you take from this story? Well, if you notice how truly alone someone is, welcome them into your life and show them the love that they deserve. We all deserve to feel loved and appreciated and in order to get it I believe you must first put it out in the world. Radiate love and appreciation and it'll bounce back and envelop you in rays of warmth.

  1. This story is so sad. It's heartbreaking to read about someone who had no one close to her that misses her. I agree with you Ben, if you see someone is alone, it is important to reach out the hand of friendship to them.
