Avital Horowitz Week 4 - My First Ski Trip

This past weekend I went on a ski trip with my childhood best friend. This was my first time ever skiing and I have got to say, it was a blast. I think it's safe to say that I now qualify to be an Olympian skier in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. All jokes aside though, I actually had the best time. At first, I was pretty nervous because I am not much of a fan of going fast without having any control. When you ski, you are literally sliding down a mountain of icy snow at a very high speed. I was scared, but I knew that if I knew how to control my speed and how to stop I would be fine.

After a few minutes of procrastination, I took a leap of faith and began to glide down the mountain. The feeling is indescribable. Suddenly all your worries of everyday life vanish and it is just you and your thoughts of now. For me, the only worry I had was whether or not I was going to crash, but I handled myself pretty well and can confidently say that I only fell a few times. After going down the mountain a few times, I quickly got the hang of how to do S turns more easily. If you don't know what S turns are, they are pretty much just wide turns that make an S in the snow. Once I felt more comfortable with my skiing abilities, I decided to try going down the steeper part of the mountain. It was exhilarating. It almost feels like you're flying. The next day, my best friend and I returned to the mountain excited and ready to ski. After a few goes down the side of the mountain I went on the day before, we decided to take a different route down the mountain. This route was much steeper and much faster. At first, I was really nervous, but once I got pasted the steep part, I felt a lot better and much more relaxed. There were a few times where I took some pretty scary tumbles, but each time I got up unscathed and ready to keep going.

Overall, I rate skiing a ten out of ten. I had an amazing time this weekend and I can't wait to go skiing again. Have you ever gone skiing or snowboarding and if so how did you like it? If not, have you ever thought about going skiing?

  1. I love skiing as much as you do. I started skiing when I was 4 years old. My family had a house in Aspen that we would go to every winter break. As the years went by, I got better and better. Instead of having to be with my mom and the private instructor, I got to as I got older go with my dad and brother.

  2. As someone who hasn't even gotten the opportunity to see snow, skiing looks very fun. While it looks slightly dangerous and thrilling, it also looks very relaxing and it seems as if the outside world melts away. There is a chance that I might get to go skiing this December, and if so, then I can't wait!
