Avital Horowitz - Week 5 - Michigan basketball coach suspended
On February 20, 2022, the Michigan Wolverines lost their battle against the Wisconsin Badgers in men's basketball. Coach, Greg Gard, of Wisconsin University, called a timeout with four seconds left in the game. The Badger's already had a high lead, but Coach Gard called a timeout anyway in order to reset the clock to ten seconds left.
After the game concluded with a score of 77-63, Badgers, both teams lined up to shake hands in order to demonstrate good sport-man-ship after a hard-fought game. Unfortunately, neither coaches were too happy with each other after the game, which led to at first, a verbal dispute. Gard grabs coach Juwan Howard's, of the Michigan Wolverines, arm to get his attention after shaking his hand. The coaches started to exchange words aggressively and were split up by their players and their fellow team staff. After being pulled apart, things started to get even more heated. Coach Juwan Howard got so angry that he threw a punch at one of the Wisconsin team’s staff members, that was trying to contain both coaches from one another.
Due to this inappropriate behavior, coach Juwan Howard was suspended by the Michigan University board for the remainder of the season and was fined $40,000. In addition to Howard’s suspension, both Terrance Williams II and Moussa Diabate, Michigan basketball forwards, were suspended from playing for one game, effective immediately. Coach Gard, of Wisconsin, was fined $10,000 and one of his players, Jahcobi Neath was suspended from one game, effective immediately.
Every week, I hear about athletes or coaches getting angry at a point and therefor causing a scene. Constantly, the players either get suspended, fined, or their opponents win by default. When losing a point it is easy to get frustrated and therefor that caused the coach to act out and get suspended.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, as out of pocket this was, I love Juwan Howard and thought the situation was funny. He definitely deserves the suspension, though.
