Atara Berkower - Week 5 - Traveling by car or by plane

Traveling by car or by plane

How is it possible for airplanes, helicopters, and jets to fly in heavy snowstorms?

On February 22, two Blackhawk helicopters crashed during training exercises. It is difficult to get to the populated ski resorts in Utah and Colorado, and only certain planes are able to get through to these ski locations. The crash occurred near a popular ski bird resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City. The helicopters crashed while attempting to land during routine survivability and mobility mountain training. The snowstorms, in places like Utah, block the view of the pilots and therefore they lose track of where to land.

Out of luck, these helicopters happened to be practice flights, so they were prepared for the worst. Nobody got severely injured because they were prepared for this to happen. This crash caused training flights to be canceled until they figure out how to stay safe in the snow conditions in the mountains.

Many people say that traveling by airplane is much safer than traveling by car because there happen to be fewer crashes less often than car crashes. We overestimate the amount of airplane crashes there are because of the stereotype that airplane crashes are the scariest crashes. The safety lesson before every plane takes off reminds everyone of how easy it can be to crash an airplane which makes airplanes seem dangerous. Although this crash in Utah happened, it does not prove that airplane crashes happen so often. We do not hear about many car crashes on the news because they happen so often that they are not newsworthy. Since airplane crashes rarely happen, the world publicizes them because of how rare they are. Do you think airplanes are safer than cars? https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/2-blackhawk-helicopters-crash-utah-ski-resort-rcna17232

  1. That is quite surprising, but it does make sense! I never thought of cars being more dangerous than planes. One thing that might be a reason of why planes are safer could be the intensive training pilots have to go through.
