Atara Berkower - Week 4 - Incoming Senior Summer

Incoming Senior Summer

Although it is only February, it is already time to figure out summer plans. Sleepaway camps are so popular nowadays that they fill up by January. College programs and Internships are wanted by the high school juniors and seniors and get filled up by February. Therefore since we are in February, it is already late to figure out what you are going to do in the summer.

I cannot figure out what I want to do over the summer. Last summer I went on an Israel program and had a lot of fun, although if I do it again it is going to be repetitive. Working at the sleep-away camp I have attended to since I was eight years old is an option for the summer, although I cannot decide what session I want to attend. I have been going first session my whole life, but many people are switching to work second month. I settled this by applying to work both months of the summer. Although this is a way to settle which month I want to go to camp, it is not an ideal plan of the summer. As an incoming senior high school studeny, I have to work on college essays and do unique programs to help get myself a better resume for college. College is so competitive nowadays that I have to start working on applying over the summer. I hope to accomplish both going to camp and working on my college applications.

What are you planning on doing this summer? Are you also already stressing about college?

Comments

  1. This summer I will be working again at the drama camp I have attended since I was seven. I've been there now for a decade and I would not want it any other way. Personally, I do not care so much about applying to internships or programs for the purpose that it will make me stand out to colleges. I believe loyalty and consistency is much more valued. I am trying not to focus on college as much because I know it will work out, but it's getting closer to that time. It will be one crazy summer for us incoming seniors.

  2. This summer I will be going to Israel and afterwards, I will be going to Mexico to volunteer at a school by teaching these kids English and working with the nurse at the school. For the longest time I was debating what I wanted to do over the summer so that it would look good on my college resume but ultimately decided that I will be going to Israel with my family and hopefully find some sort of medical volunteer opportunity. As summer approaches, I am beginning to call places and do some research to see the available volunteer opportunities across Israel. At the same time though, I want to enjoy my summer and not volunteer every day because I feel that I should be spending my time with the family and friends I haven't seen in a long time. Like you, I am stressing out for college but I am trying to stay positive and hopefully everything will fall into place.

  3. I am looking forward to summer because it will be a fun break. I am planning on working as a counselor at the JCC summer camp and possibly going on a teen tour or traveling with my family. I'm not really stressing about college yet, I'm just enjoying my time in high school while also looking forward to college.
