Atara Berkower - Week 3 - The Olympics are heading in a Positive Direction
The Olympics are heading in a Positive Direction
The Winter Olympics started on February 4, 2022 in Beijing. Before a week has gone by. 32 athletes tested positive for Covid. These athletes were immediately put into isolation, following 50 athletes being discharged from isolation. The Olympics made something called the “closed-loop” which is an area that separates athletes from the public. Out of the 70,500 PCR tests taken, 5 athletes and team officials tested positive. There has been a total of 159 positive cases among athletes and team officials. The number of people leaving isolation is greater than the number of people entering isolation. The Olympics has done a great job preventing the spread of the virus.
Many of the isolated athletes shared their experience in isolation.“Russian biathlon competitor Valeria Vasnetsova had posted on her Instagram story a photo of the food that she claimed was "breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days already."” The food did not look appetizing and the Vasnetsova continued that she is “very hungry” and that her “bones are already sticking out” from not eating. The Olympics responded by saying that they delivered her better quality food and a stationary bike.
The Olympic athletes have been able to compete without taking Covid precautions. The few positive athletes have isolated themselves and it did not affect their performance. Now that there are fewer positive athletes, the Olympics are going in a positive direction to keep themselves safe.
Are you actively watching the Olympics? Is it usually something that you follow along with?

It's interesting to see how these things will play out with Covid going on. We keep trying to do our "normal" things in the world when we have a pandemic going on, so we need to take proper precautions. But how will this look for a world-wide sporting event that creates a very high risk for spreading Covid?
ReplyDeleteI am not actively watching the winter Olympics. I think it's interesting to see how the Olympics balance Covid-safety and getting back to "normal".
ReplyDeleteI am excited to watch some of the events happening in the Winter Olympics, and wonder how it will go with Covid around, if they have to cancel it towards the end of the Olympics because too much people will catch the virus or if it will continue all the way through with precautions.
