Ariella Green Week 17: Lady Windermere's Fan

Ariella Green Week 17: Lady Windermere's Fan

In 1893, playwright Oscar Wilde published his comedic play titled Lady Windermere's Fan. Lady Margaret Windemere suspects that her husband is being unfaithful to her with the beautiful Mrs. Erlynne. In reality, Mrs. Erlynne is Lady Windemere's mother who abandoned her as an infant, but in the end sacrifices her own reputation to save her daughter’s marriage. The FAU Department of Theatre and Dance is performing this hilarious show at the Marleen Forkas Studio One Theatre between the 18th and 27th of February. The cast members conveyed a clear understanding of their characters which heightened the experience.

Throughout the show, you felt the actors’ pains, motives, and desires. They all had a strong stage presence and clear objectives. Many of the actors spoke with Old English dialects minus Mr. Hopper (Blaine DeBerry) who spoke with an Australian dialect. Lady Windermere was portrayed by Ashley Brooke Miller and she truly showed the complexity in Lady Windermere's choice between her lover Lord Darlington, or her husband. Mrs. Erlynne was portrayed by Alyssa Frewen who had a bubbly personality and made all of the men on the stage yearn for just a bit of her attention. My personal favorite character was Lady Agatha Carlisle who was portrayed by our own alum Daniela Supovitz. Her memorable line which stole the show was “Yes Mama” whenever she spoke with her mother the Duchess of Berwick who was portrayed by Rachel Dawson. Dawson’s facial expressions and witty comments made the audience want to see her on stage.

The dapper costumes were designed by Paula Calvo and they brought the audience back in time to the 1890s. The actresses even changed their character shoes or slippers throughout the show to match with their current costume. The set was of a rich home for the time period with Victorian couches, a wooden desk, a mantel, a bookshelf, and two dining room tables. The lighting for the play was normal stage lighting throughout the 4 acts, except when the act was coming to an end, a spotlight would appear on the last character delivering their final line. The makeup for the actors was regular stage makeup. Miller’s hair was in an updo knot and Supovitz’s hair was half up and down with loose curls to give her character a juvenile look.

The intention of Lady Windermere's Fan is to make the audience aware about who we judge. Lady Windermere hated Mrs. Erlynne, her mother, (which is never revealed to her) until she saw the sacrifice she made to save her from making a bad decision. The classic play was very professional and it is bound to make you laugh.

Recently, I have been attending many local productions and have wanted to share my experiences. I highly recommend seeing some local performances if you’re bored and have nothing to do.
