Ariella Green Week 16: Paislee Shultis Found
In July of 2019, four year old Paislee Shultis was reported missing in Tioga County, New York. Her parents, Kimberly Cooper and Kirk Shultis Jr were the prime suspects in the case. On Valentine’s Day of this year, Paislee, age 6, was found in Kirk Shultis senior’s home in Saugerties.
Before the police found young Paislee, the police had to get a warrant to search the suspected home. Homeowner Kirk Shultis Sr claimed that he had no clue where Paislee was. After an hour of searching, a detective discovered how strange the staircase was constructed, and low and behold Paislee and her mother, Ms. Cooper, underneath the claustrophobic staircase.
Before the abduction, Paislee’s biological parents lost custody of her and her sister. The police believe that this is the motive behind the kidnapping.
All of the adults involved (the parents and grandfather) were arrested and charged for kidnapping Paislee. However, the father and grandfather have been released pending trial, while Ms.Cooper remains in Ulster County’s jail. Paislee is safe and being taken care of currently by her legal guardian who has guardianship over her and her older sister as well. Unfortunately, many children who go missing for a long period of time are usually abducted by their own family members.
Question: If you were ever in the situation where you lost custody of your own child, would you consider kidnapping them? Why or why not? Do you think the parents should be severely punished?
