Ariella Green Week 14: Burner Phones in Beijing 2/1/22
This year's Winter Olympics is occurring in Beijing, and the FBI along with the National Olympic Committee is urging the American athletes and those attending the games to use a burner phone. The FBI wants those in attendance to be cautious by leaving their phones at home to prevent any online theft or tracking.
The reason why the National Olympic Committee is promoting the use of burner phones is because of the report done by Citizen Lab about the Olympic’ app. The Olympics has created an app that everyone will have to download to ensure everyone is safe because of Covid. The report's reasoning was due to censorship and lack of personal data protection. The United State’s government along with Canada and the United Kingdom will not be sending delegates to attend the event.
Additionally, the Chinese government is spending over three billion dollars on the games to make it a great success. Human rights groups are outraged because China is ignoring the Uyghurs in China.
Personally, I would not want to attend the Olympics under these circumstances. I would much rather watch it from the comfort of my living room. It is kind of crazy that these athletes and attendees will have to bring a burner phone to protect themselves. In a few years, the United States might even suggest that everyone use a burner phone when they travel internationally.
Question: What are your thoughts about the use of burner phones for travel? Would you attend the Olympics under these circumstances?
Personally, I would not be happy if in the future I had to travel using burner phones. Not only does this mean I have to transfer my contacts or remember certain contact information but also, while I travel, I love taking pictures. This means that after traveling, I would have to hustle to make sure I get all the pictures onto my actual phone. Like you, I would also not attend Olympics under these circumstances and would rather watch them at home in peace.
